Shooting Schedule

I edited a shooting schedule together for the cast and actors to follow. I worked out the times - how long it would take to get hair and make-up done for the girls, but we will be setting up while this is going on and making finishing touches so we do not waste time. The whole cast needs to be in school for 8:30 and in the canteen ready for hair and make-up, this will make sure that we start as soon as possible with out wasting time!

Task 2 - Website

Having a website of a music artist is very important it is illustrating to artist in some ways, so in our own website we want to represent the idea of an urban, mysterious style, which links well with the style of music 'noise pop'. We sketched out a rough plan to what our idea would be for the front/home page; ignoring the colours as we are going for dark smoky colours, and as shown a heart in the middle with a crown representing girl empowerment and the four girls drifting around the heart.

There are some key elements that we have added onto the website such as news, gallery, shop, sign up etc. However this is only rough so there are lots of improvements and adjustments that can be made. We need to add in a short bio about the band - details that are ket for getting the audience trapped in and interested. I also had the idea of whenever you enter the website your mouse key should change shape/design to something that is significant to the band for instance the red heart becomes your curser.

I looked at Tegan and Sara's website and I really like the layout of the homepage and how you access the other pages.


 This top image shows the home page, which is a slide show of different picture. The image below is also the home page (a different image this time), i like that idea of not having one set home page image.

The image to the right down the side is shown on the left hand side of their website, this is the menu and it also appears again right and that bottom on the website with all the social media website, which i have shown just below.

Task 1 - Music Publicity Campaign

I researched similar artist to Sleigh Bells and the two artist Tegan and Sara came up. There music is very similar to the style of our song 'Kids' by Sleigh Bells. I listened to their music and then researched into their albums to see if this style of music continues throughout and it does. When i was looking at their albums i was very interested in their album art work and how they combine both their faces in an abstract way. We could take this element and combine the faces of all our singers.

Also the 'So Jealous' album is similar to the album we have created, heart component and dark colours.

Grimes:
This is the album cover for Grimes, I thought it was very similar to our concept of being creepy but quite simplistic. I think we could take elements from this album artwork and apply it to our music campaign. 

Santigold:

Her album artwork caught my eye as it is so basic however adding the gold glitter from her mouth is an absurd abstract element, which i think we could include somehow. Her music is very similar to our style of noise-pop so i think this could be something we think about, having a simplistic artwork. I really like the font she uses on the album, so this is also an element i think i will look at for our campaign.

Emails sent to Cast

Emails sent to the cast

The first email to our final cast.



The second email we sent telling them the date of our shoot and telling them about filling out a blue card. A blue card is when the student lists all their subjects and teachers names and goes to each class and gets the teachers permission to miss the date that is written at the top of the slip, this then needs to be signed off by their house masters then returned to me.

We will continue sending out emails to our cast informing them of updates about costumes etc, nearer the time.

Animatics Feedback Videos



Positives:
  • A lot of people commented on the fact that they liked the idea of having a point of view (POV) shot through out. It made them feel more involved and connected to the video. 
  • They liked the sense of girl power and domination. 
  • One person we asked didn't personally like the track we had chosen however he said that it had good energy and we had done well to choose a track that no one has heard of.
Negatives/improvements:
  • Some people found it quite confusing, due to our lack of drawing skills, but they got the sense of girl power. 
  • It became clearer throughout the storyboard.  

My Groups Animatics



I filmed a video of each frame on our storyboard with Genny then imported the footage onto iMovie to create an animatic. This created a rough version of our music video so we get an idea of how it will turn out with the different shots. We cut the footage together with our choice of song 'kids' by Sleigh Bells, taking care to synchronies each shot with the correct part of the track. I think this is a good start to the animatic but it think we could improve it by adding a lot more shots at various angles etc.

An animatic storyboard is a graphic organiser in the form of images/illustrations shown in a sequence used to visualise a motion picture. This has really helped us as it allowed our group to view what we have so far and what needs changing or adding also what the video will potentially look like in the end.

Decided Cast



Eloise Roitman

- Beach room
- Very bold and wacky make-up and clothing. We want it to almost look plastic like.















Georgia Hehir

- Cave room, this character needs to be crazy and very in your face, which is why we have cast Georgia because we think she will be able to pull this off very well.









Sana Kulvanich

- Illusion room, we feel like Sana would be able to create a atmosphere that is very eery and wacky.










Hannah Palmer

- red room, this is the perfect roll for Hans because is very mystical as she intertwines between the fabric hanging, this could look really good on camera and i think Hans could make it look very intense.

I wanted a variety of people for the audition so i could see who worked well together as a group. I thought it would be good if we brought in different ethnicities making it a bit different and multi cultured.

Ollie Allgrove - Executive Producer

In today's lesson we had the experience of talking to Ollie Allgrove who is a Executive producer at a company called 'The Mill'. He gave us some tips to help us along the way as we create our music videos. Here a couple notes I made whilst Ollie was talking:

  • In charge of production department across the UK
  • They want to make the impossible possible
  • Being prepared and getting your ideas across is how to succeed in the industry
  • first visual effects Oscar for 'Gladiator' 
SSE advert in 2016:
  • The unexpected - an orangutan walking around a city
  • 4 months studying the animal
  • Gained help from an ape impersonator
  • You can make anything if you put your mind to it


Landing the Job - What you want to do? Think about your track and how it speaks to you in some way:
  • selling the treatment 'love letter to the artist', covers everything you will do and why you are going to do it
  • convince people what's in your head is achievable
  • storyboards, still images that show your idea
  • make a connection with the artist
  • if you don't have the money for what you want to do, think of another way you can do it
  • keeping things simple and make it work
  • if you have failed to hook them in the first 2-3 pages it wouldn't be the correct video
Jolene and the Jing Jang Jong:
  • simple effects 
  • simple props
  • low budgeted
  • someone running/walking through a building
  • single move
  • the track is 2.22 mins long - if you are on a low budget keep the time shorter. 


The Chemical Brothers:

  • The treatment 'ballet dancer turns into a robot'
  • A lot of technical work needed in order for this to work
  • All together there were 7200 frames
  • Having a constant reference to the dancers body and what she is doing - witness cameras
  • Ease her body throughout
  • They scan the body then track the 3D model over her movements
  • They used cloth stimulation with her clothes
  • This took 4½ months to complete
  • Did not worry about the budget it was more about the quality of the work they were making.

Lighting - changed idea again

We had a meeting with the lighting designer today after some discussion decided that the idea of shooting the video in an industrial site would be much more difficult than we initially thought. So we came to the conclusion that the video will be all studio based however part of the video will be shot where all the girls are together singing with very dark surroundings and strobe lighting (sharpy wash 330). The studio setting will be a kind of adventure play ground, that is full of alleyways, rope, netting that the girls can swing/hang off etc. while they are searching for the male feature in the video. We want a very eery setting throughout and places the girls can come out of all of a sudden.

We are hoping to shoot this video in lots of different shots and then in the editing process we will cut it very carefully so it looks like one whole shot.

These are some images that i think relate to our idea, having narrow corridors and netting hanging from the walls (maybe not having them standing on it but the material is the type of thing I was looking at). 

A change of plan


Our group have decided that the initial idea we had would not work since we do not have the facilities to shoot it so the video would not have been realistic. In our meeting with Jason we reflected on the talk we had with Ollie Allgrove and his main point was that simplicity is key. We took this and came up with the idea of 5 girls, 1 boy in a 'Manhunt' situation.
Jason instantly said that he had a location that would be perfect for this style of video, it would be based at an industrial site near school.
The 5 girls would pull up in a 4 by 4 car, jumping/walking out and placing a map on the hood of the car. They then all split up into smaller groups or go solo, hunting for this boy. We decided the story line would be based around this one guy who has been going out with all these girls at the same time, they have found out and are now out for revenge.
The girls would be dressed in provocative clothing e.g. camouflage, leather style with green and brown face paint but they would all be individual in some sort of way.


This is the very rough plan we made in class so we could get a little structure to our work.


Storyboards

Whilst our research is continuing our group have created a storyboard that evaluates our music video in drawn images with annotation and shot references. It helps us visualise the flow and camera shots that will eventually appear on the screen.

When storyboards are used in the industry:

Pre-production - rough plans, looking at the shots that may take place in the shoot and which of these work.
Production - Photo copies are given to the team so all members of the crew can visualise it and know what is going on. 
Post-production - helps to remind the team of what has been shot already so they don't over shoot, it also helps with the order of editing. 

When creating our storyboard we will have to think about all this information so that we use our storyboard to its full potential and use it during the production period. We will all work on the storyboard together so we can jot down any rough ideas we have about any shots then finalise it together on the final one. We were given a basic storyboard, which will be used for our start ideas:


Rough Timeline



























These are images of our group working very hard on our rough timeline. The timeline shows all the  times the song changes throughout and the different shots we might use in our video to depict these changes. We will develop the timeline further during the process, this is just to give us a clear an understanding of what we are doing.
